3-0 Valverde's Hat-Trick against city

Real Madrid hosted Manchester City in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, delivering a surprising and dominant 3–0 victory despite a heavily depleted squad. In what has become a recurring European rivalry over the past five seasons—described by Rodrygo as a “derby”—Madrid overturned recent struggles and a previous 2–1 home defeat to City in the group stage. Under new manager Álvaro Arbeloa, replacing Xabi Alonso, Los Blancos showcased a refreshed tactical approach, overcoming key absences including Mbappé, Bellingham, and Rodrygo.

The match began with both teams pushing high. Madrid attempted to press, but City looked more confident early on, trying to settle in the attacking third. However, fueled by a roaring Bernabéu crowd, Madrid created the first real chance in the 8th minute through Brahim Díaz, who energized the fans.

Arbeloa’s side focused on quick transitions and counterattacks whenever City left space, while the English side maintained high pressure but failed to produce clear chances.

After a huge missed opportunity from Bernardo Silva, it was Madrid who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute. Captain Valverde rounded Donnarumma—who misjudged his run completely—and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Less than ten minutes later, Valverde struck again, capitalizing on a deflection off Rúben Dias and once again catching the Italian goalkeeper off guard. The Bernabéu erupted, with even Bellingham visibly celebrating from the stands. The number 8 reached 17 goal contributions this season despite playing as a midfielder.

Madrid were firmly in control, dominating possession and dictating the tempo. Despite a few attempts from City, the visitors failed to convert and left spaces for Madrid to exploit.

Four minutes before halftime, Valverde completed his hat-trick with a goal assisted by Brahim Díaz, making it 3–0. The entire stadium chanted his name—Man of the Match honors were already sealed.

The second half began with Madrid still on the front foot. Brahim Díaz nearly added a fourth, but this time Donnarumma was ready.

In the 55th minute, Vinícius Jr. won a penalty after being brought down in the box (the exact dynamics were unclear), but Donnarumma redeemed himself by saving the shot, preventing a heavier defeat. Vinícius apologized to the crowd but was warmly applauded.

Madrid showed they could compete even with many absences, silencing critics and playing as a cohesive unit. Despite the comfortable lead, Los Blancos continued to attack, while City struggled to find space.

With fifteen minutes remaining, Arbeloa brought on Thiago Pitarch, a young Castilla talent who made his Champions League debut at just over eighteen, breaking a record previously held by Raúl. The entire stadium applauded the youngster.

The second half was more controlled and less intense than the first, also influenced by multiple substitutions. Meanwhile, the away section gradually emptied, reflecting the disappointment of Manchester City fans, who had not expected such a one-sided result.
